In 2018-2019, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) conducted a Formative Evaluation of the Education Renewal and Innovation Framework (ERI Evaluation).  During the same time, the Office of the Auditor General of Canada (OAG) conducted a performance Audit (OAG Audit) of early childhood to Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (JK-12) education in the Northwest Territories (NWT).  

Prospective Teacher Information

Preparing to teach for the first time after graduation, or moving to a new city for a teaching job, can be a daunting task. The Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) has put together documents and links that you may find helpful while you consider applying for teaching positions in the Northwest Territories and while you are preparing to teach and get settled in your new northern community.

Overview

Teaching in the Northwest Territories is a challenging and rewarding career that provides educators with the opportunity for an adventure in a spectacular part of Canada. Our schools are great places to work and our communities are great places to live. We recognize that our most important resource is our young people and educators are in a very unique position to help develop the full potential of our students.

Early Learning and Child Care

Early learning and child care is vitally important for the healthy development of all children in the NWT. A child’s brain grows most rapidly between birth and age five, and everyone involved in a child’s life – families, grandparents, caregivers, and anyone else – shapes a child’s early development.

ECE’s Early Learning and Child Care Division oversees early learning and child care programs for children from birth to age 12.

JK-12 School Curriculum

Curriculum in the Northwest Territories is managed by the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE).

The GNWT is committed to doing its part to renew the Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 curriculum and ensure it is taught in relevant, research-based, innovative ways. 

Teachers are expected to follow the NWT Curriculum, which can be found in schools across the territory, or downloaded by visiting the three program pages:
