Literacy

Literacy has a profound and pervasive impact on the residents and communities of the Northwest Territories. Literacy, or its lack, impacts people of all ages and permeates every aspect of our society.  In the Northwest Territories, literacy is seen as a lifelong process and is encouraged in all eleven official languages. Literacy is understood to include many different skills, including reading, writing, numeracy, computer use, oral communication, problem solving and critical thinking.

Finding and Choosing Early Learning and Child Care Programs

Overview

Early learning and child care play a crucial role in the healthy development of all children. During the first five years of a child's life, their brain grows rapidly, and everyone involved in their life, including family members, grandparents, caregivers, and others, plays a significant role in shaping their early development.

Choosing quality child care is an important decision. You want a secure, healthy environment that fosters your children's development in all areas - social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional.

NWT Student Records

At the Department of Education, Culture and Employment, we keep all enrolment information on students attending schools in the NWT. This includes all the marks on students from Grade 10 through 12. Note: we may receive marks from Grade 9 students as well. We are also responsible for keeping track of all diploma exam marks and printing of diplomas and Minister awards.

Students and parents can request a copy of their student record (transcript) by completing the online form.

Education Hall of Fame

Overview

The Education Hall of Fame provides lasting recognition and gratitude toward those who have provided exemplary service or made a lasting impression to the field of education in the Northwest Territories. Through induction into the Education Hall of Fame, the Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) recognizes individuals that have gone above and beyond their expected duties by creating a safe and inclusive environment, empowering the people around them, building a strong sense of community, overcoming challenges and being a life-long learner.

Labour Market Information

Labour market information can be overwhelming and confusing; learning what is it and how to use it can help a person make informed decisions about their education, training, employment, or business operations.

Labour market information can be simple (like a news story) or complex (charts, graphs, analysis). If you need help understanding labour market information or would like support in determining your career path, please contact a career development officer at your local ECE Service Centre.
