Overview

The NWT Senior Citizen Supplementary Benefit (SCSB) provides financial assistance to low income NWT seniors to help pay for living costs.

The program provides a monthly cash payment to low-income seniors who are receiving the Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) or the Spouse’s Allowance (SA) from the federal government.

A T5007 slip will be issued to you if you receive SCSB benefits greater than $500 in the calendar year. The benefits are not taxable, but you are required to report this income when filing your taxes.

Available Funding

The monthly amount of the SCSB is $196.00 per month.

The monthly payment is included with OAS and GIS payments. Signing up for direct deposit will ensure payments are automatically deposited into your bank account on the third-from-last banking day of each month. Otherwise, the payment will be sent by mail, usually during the last three banking days of each month.

Deadline

There is no deadline to apply. You will be automatically considered for this benefit if you receive the OAS and the GIS or the Spouse’s Allowance from the federal government.

Eligibility

You are automatically eligible for the SCSB if you receive the OAS and the GIS, or Spouse’s Allowance from the federal government.

How to apply

You must complete an initial application for the federal Guaranteed Income Supplement. Each year after that, the income reported through your income tax return determines eligibility.
