Key Competencies
NWT Concept-based Competency-driven Curriculum
In the NWT, learning is lifelong and grounded in Being and Becoming a capable person; everyone is born capable and continuously develops their skills, gifts, and talents. The focus of the NWT concept-based competency-driven curriculum is the development of NWT Key Competencies. These broad competencies are demonstrated through the ability to transfer knowledge, skills and understanding across a variety of situations. In schools, they are deepened, expanded, and connected through Knowing, Doing, and Understanding.
Concept-based
The concepts in all subject area curricula are implicit; they exist in three elements of the curriculum: Content (Knowing), Curricular Competencies (Doing), and Big Ideas (Understanding). Some of these concepts act like building blocks to help further understanding in a subject. Others are broad transferable concepts, which contribute to abilities to learn effectively across subject areas.
Competency-driven
The competencies of the curriculum include both the proficiency developed in the larger NWT Key Competencies and the skills, strategies, and processes of the curricular competencies in each subject. Active engagement with both the curricular competencies and the broad lifelong Key Competencies contributes to transferable learning.
