Increasing Tuition
Overview
Public post-secondary education institutions are required to apply for tuition increases and can only increase tuition fees once per academic year.
The request for the tuition increase must be within the change in the past two years of the consumer price index plus 2.5%, or 10%, whichever is less.
For example, if your tuition is $5000 and today’s consumer price index is 7.6%, you can only raise your tuition by 7.6%. The consumer price index plus 2.5% would be 10.1%, you can raise your tuition by 10%.
An increase required of 10% or greater is defined as an “exceptional tuition fee.” An institution can apply for an exceptional tuition fee increase after it has been established for five years or if five years has passed since the last exception tuition fee increase was applied.
