Northern Experience Bonus for centre-based employees

Overview

Northern context is essential for children in the Northwest Territories, and employees who have worked in the north will be recognized and receive an additional bonus each year if they have worked in a licensed early learning and child care facility in a *northern environment for at least five years.

Available Funding

After working for five years in a licensed early learning and child care facility (either centre-based or home-based) in the north, employees can receive a bonus of up to $1,000 per year, depending on their work hours.

After working for 10 years in a licensed early learning and child care facility (either centre-based or home-based) in the north, employees can receive a bonus of up to $2,000 per year, depending on their work hours.

An eligible employee will receive the amount pro-rated for the number of hours they work, up to 1,950 hours in a year. If an employee works over 1,950 hours a year, they will receive the total amount they are eligible for. If an employee works less than 1,950 hours a year, they will receive an amount based on the number of hours they work.

Employees can also receive the Indigenous Educators bonus if they receive the Northern Experience bonus.

Eligibility

Employees who have worked in a licensed early learning and child care facility in a 'northern environment' for at least five years are eligible for this funding.

*A northern environment is any prescribed or intermediate zone defined by the Canada Revenue Agency. This means any licensed facility in the three territories, or the northern parts of the provinces would be eligible.
