Archaeological Permits
Overview
All archaeological research in the NWT must be conducted by an archaeologist who meets the requirements set out under the Archaeological Sites Act (Act) and Regulations and has been issued an archaeology research permit.
There are two types of archaeological permits:
- Class 1 Permit: Authorizes a permittee to survey and document the characteristics of an archaeological site in a manner that does not alter or otherwise disturb the archaeological site. Class 1 Permit holders are not permitted to collect artifacts.
- Class 2 Permit: Authorizes the permittee to survey and document the characteristics of an archaeological sites; excavate an archaeological site; remove archaeological artifacts from an archaeological site; or otherwise alter or disturb an archaeological site.
Eligibility
For a Class 1 Permit, the applicant must have:
- A University degree with a major in Archaeology or Anthropology
- Two years fieldwork experience in northern archaeology (includes northern parts of the provinces)
For a Class 2 Permit, the applicant must have:
- Minimum of a master’s degree in archaeology or anthropology (with archaeology focus)
- Three years fieldwork experience in northern archaeology, or two years fieldwork experience in NWT archaeology
