Report an Archaeological Find
Overview
Items from the past - archaeological artifacts like arrowheads or stone tools, or features on the landscape, like stone circles, can tell us stories only if they are kept in place. Although it may be tempting to pick things up, it is against the law because so much knowledge can be lost by taking them out of their original context. By reporting these finds you will help ensure that our heritage resources are properly documented and protected.
Report a find
If you believe that you have found an archaeological artifact:
- Take photographs of the object(s) you found, if possible
- Mark the location of the find, which can include:
- A map or image of the location
- GPS coordinates
- Land description
- A reference to a permanent landmark
- Record the date of your discovery
Once you have the information ready, contact us at archaeology@gov.nt.ca or call 867-767-9347 ext. 71251.
