Indigenous Languages and Education Secretariat

Vision and Mandate

Aboriginal languages are used extensively, on a daily basis, to communicate in NWT homes and communities, as well as within the organizations and agencies providing services to the public.

The 18th Legislative Assembly has mandated the Aboriginal Languages Secretariat (ALS) to:

  • Update the 2010 NWT Aboriginal Languages Plan: A Shared Responsibility

  • Renew the Aboriginal Language and Culture-based Education (ALCBE) Directive

  • Re-negotiating the Canada-NWT Cooperation Agreement for French and Aboriginal Languages

  • Amalgamate the Official Languages Board and the Aboriginal Languages Revitalization Board
