ADULT LITERACY AND BASIC EDUCATION (ALBE) FUNDING SOURCES

   
 
Adult Literacy and Basic Education Fund

The Department of ECE provides ALBE base funding to Aurora College for the delivery of ALBE 110-160 (approximately grades 1-12) in the communities throughout the NWT.

Community Literacy Projects Fund

The Community Literacy Projects Program was established in 1990 to provide funding to Community Education Councils, Bands, Friendship Centres and local women’s groups for a wide variety of programs to meet specific community needs.

Community Skills for Work Fund (Previously called Investing In People Program and Northern Skills for Work Program)

The Community Skills for Work Program assists income support clients in achieving self-sufficiency through education, work experience and support services. Projects are delivered by the College or community-based organizations. They may include adult literacy and basic education, skills based training, personal development courses and work activity projects.


THE FOLLOWING ALBE PROGRAMS ARE ESTABLISHED UNDER THE NWT LITERACY STRATEGY:

Literacy Programs and Support for Seniors Fund

The Literacy Programs and Support for Seniors Program recognizes that Seniors need opportunities to get a sufficient level of literacy to make sure active, independent living occurs. Funding is available to support projects such as peer tutoring, community learning groups, public awareness, literacy and health, computer literacy, etc.

Learning Support for Persons with Disabilities Fund

The Learning Support for Persons with Disabilities Program helps NWT residents with disabilities improve their literacy skills. Funding is available to provide supports for persons with disabilities who are experiencing barriers and are unable to reach educational or vocational goals. Supports may include assessment and counseling, assistive devices, aids and access technology, books, tools and equipment, tutors, tuition and travel, transportation, etc.

Workplace Literacy Fund

The purpose of the Workplace Literacy Fund is to broaden our literacy partnership with large and small businesses, unions and community-based employers to provide the opportunity for employees to further develop their basic skills. Eligible projects or activities may include training for workers in workplace-related reading, writing, mathematics, oral communications, problem solving and critical thinking skills; basic skills portion of training when integrated with technical skill development; workplace needs assessments and reports, etc.

Literacy Programs and Support for Correctional Centres Fund

The Literacy Programs and Support for Correctional Centres Program provides funds to NWT Correctional Centres to increase participation in literacy related programming.
