Education, Culture and Employment and Health and Social Services are working together to achieve a vision where:

Healthy children of healthy parents grow up in strong supporting families in caring communities.

To achieve this vision, they have created the Healthy Children Initiative. The Healthy Children Initiative is a program that provides funding to support people, organizations and communities that create programs and services in support of the vision. The Initiative operates through a family centered and holistic approach.

Types of Funding

The Healthy Children Initiative has two different types of funding available: Community Initiatives and Supporting Child Services.

The Community Initiatives funding provides aid to existing programs or services that improve the development of early childhood intervention programs for children 0-6 years old and their families.

The Supportive Child Services fund is used on an individual basis for children who need intensive support or specific assistance such as: supported child care, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and is also designed to support integration of children with identified needs in centre-based early childhood programs.

Principles of the Initiative

The key principles guiding the development of the Healthy Children Initiative are:

  • Community ownership;

  • Culturally based

  • Building on existing strengths of the child, parent(s), family and community;

  • That families are the primary teachers and caregivers;

  • Access to a full range of family support;

  • Agencies working together to support families;

  • Evaluation and continuous improvement.

Why this Initiative is Important

It is critical that children from birth to five years of age, and their families have access to programs and services that give them a strong, positive start in their early years.
