Apprenticeship Training Assistance

   

Apprenticeship Training Assistance is a wage subsidy, whereby an employer, the Government of the Northwest Territories, and an apprentice enter into an agreement which provides a portion of the apprentice's salary to assist the employer in training an apprentice for permanent employment.

Program Objective:

The objective of Apprenticeship Training Assistance is to help apprentices to become a Certified journeyperson in designated trades under the Apprenticeship, Trade and Occupations Act (ATOC).

Through a wage subsidy to employers, the cost of training are off set.

Eligible Employers:

NWT businesses, corporations, aboriginal organizations, housing associations, local governments and Government departments are eligible. Preference is given to employers who are registered or eligible for registration under the Business Incentives Policy.

Employers will:

  • Comply with the requirements for apprentice employment under the ATOC regulation
  • Demonstrate a commitment to complete the apprentice's training to certification and to employ the apprentice as a journeyperson upon completion of training

Eligible Clients:

To be eligible for Apprenticeship Training Assistance clients must:

  • Be 16 years of age
  • Be able to comply with requirements as an apprentice under the ATOC regulations
  • Be a resident of the NWT, or
  • Currently receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits, or
  • Have had an EI claim which ended in the past 3-5 years

Financial Assistance:

Subsidies are negotiable with the employer to a maximum of $300 per week. Negotiated rates vary regionally.

Note: All EI benefits will discontinue, when trainees receiving EI become employees and are compensated with wages.

How Long is the Program?

Maximum duration for Apprenticeship Training Assistance is 52 weeks.
