Training on the Job financially assists employers in training
northern residents. Trainees obtain the necessary skills to
access and retain meaningful work. Training may be on the job,
institutional or a combination of both.
Program Objective
The
objective of the Training on the Job (TOJ) program is to help
Northerners acquire workplace skills needed for meaningful and
permanent employment.
Wage
subsidies are provided to employers to off set the costs of
training.
Eligible Employers
NWT
employers in business a minimum of six months and licensed to
operate in the territories
Preference is given to employers who are eligible for inclusion
on the Government business incentives registry
Non-government organizations, Aboriginal organizations, housing
authorities or associations and local levels of government
(program is not to be used to fund federal or territorial
government jobs)
Eligible Clients
Persons who are eligible must:

Be a resident of the NWT, or
-
Be currently receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits,
or
-
Have had an EI claim which ended in the past 3-5 years
Priority for training opportunities will be given to Affirmative
Action candidates.
Financial Assistance
The
Department of Education, Culture and Employment will contribute
on a negotiated, cost shared basis, up to 80% of an employee's
wages to a maximum of $300 per week or $7.50 per hour.
Negotiated rates vary regionally.
NOTE: All EI benefits will discontinue when trainees receiving
EI become employees and are compensated with wages.
How long is the Program?
The
training period will not exceed 52 weeks, unless warranted by
exceptional circumstances.
